1970s MEN

The 1970s were a decade of remarkable achievements for the Bucknell Bison cross country and track teams. It was an era of growth and dominance, marked by the launch of the women’s program and the beginning of an extraordinary men’s team cross country dual meet streak in 1975, which would extend for an incredible 14 years.

70’s teams secured multiple East Coast Conference championships—both individually and collectively—well before the Patriot League era. A long list of standout athletes deserve shoutouts but maybe particularly George Buckheit who competed at the highest levels of the NCAA, while Thomas McLean emerged as one of the world’s premier 800-meter runners. Most importantly, the decade forged deep and lasting bonds among teammates, creating friendships and shared memories that remain profoundly meaningful to this day.
